At Knapp, students in our Gifted and Talented Program, as well as those in the talent pool, receive opportunities to engage in high level learning experiences that are interactive, rigorous, and connected to students’ interests. Mrs. Schreyer, the GT teacher, collaborates with classroom teachers to provide differentiated instruction including interest-based projects, as well as enrichment opportunities. Our GT students’ social/emotional growth is aligned with our “Knapp Knight Character Traits”- Respect, Cooperation, Kindness, Empathy, Responsibility, Perseverance, and Integrity. Each student identified as Gifted or Highly Gifted has an Advanced Learning Plan (ALP) that is developed with the classroom teacher, student, parents/guardians, and Mrs. Schreyer. The ALP includes academic and social emotional goals. At Knapp we continuously strive to equitably identify students for our GT program. In grades Kindergarten and 2nd grade, we participate in Universal Screening Testing using the NNAT3 and NGAT tests. Students in grade 1, 3, 4 and 5 are assessed based upon request each fall and spring. Please reach out to Mrs. Schreyer with any questions about our Gifted and Talented Program.

We are finishing our first units!
5th graders will finish their Aerodynamics unit on Tuesday making final edits to their opinion writing. The next unit they chose is Volcanoes. This will include making volcanoes, using chemistry to make the volcano erupt, and completing research to learn more about volcanoes.
Our 3rd graders finished their first research and informative writing project. After the Thanksgiving break, they’ll choose their next research project.
I’ll be posting all their first projects in the next few days so you can see their work!
Reach out to me if you have any questions or comments!

Here’s what’s happening in Gifted and Talented.
Last week you should have received your child’s Advanced Learning Plan for the year. If you haven’t received that yet, please let me know. Also let me know if you have any questions about it.
In fifth grade we are continuing our Aerodynamics/Scientific Method unit.
Our fifth graders have been engaged learning about the forces of aerodynamics: lift, gravity, thrust, and drag. Their final unit project will include opinion writing about what they’ve learned regarding aerodynamics. Their opinion writing will include evidence from what they learned through our experiments and research. I’ll share their projects with you when we finish.
Our third graders are continuing their first research project on a topic of their choice. I’ll share their projects with you as well.
Included in this post is the Fall 2024 DPS Gifted and Talented Newsletter.
As always, please reach out to me if you have any questions, concerns, or comments.

October
It has been wonderful to start working with our GT students! During our first week I had them fill out what they want to work on this year- much like the form I sent home to you. Our main focus for 5th grade will be science experiments and the scientific method, and in 3rd grade we’ll be completing research projects.
Thank you for filling out the beginning of the year’s Advanced Learning Plan (ALP) parent forms. I’ll use this information, along with your child’s input, to create their ALPs. Those will be completed by the end of October.
In 5th grade, our first unit is learning the components of the scientific method integrated with aerodynamics. Students are learning how airplanes fly in regards to force, lift, and gravity. This hands-on approach allows them to make predictions, work collaboratively, and problem solve while using math skills such as measurement, graphing, and division.
In 3rd grade, our first unit is researching topics of their choice while learning about Informative writing. We are using online resources such as PebbleGo and Britannica School to answer questions they have formulated. They’ll share what they’ve learned in Google Slides. I’ll share these projects once they’re finished.
I’m adding some pictures so you can see our gifted kids in action!
Please reach out to me if you have any questions or comments.
Also, please let me know if Bloomz isn’t translating my posts in your language of choice. Además, avíseme si Bloomz no está traduciendo mis publicaciones en el idioma de su elección.
